Authentic Hues
There’s More to Personal Colour Than Just Your Season
“Am I a Spring or a Summer?”
When people come for a personal colour analysis, that’s usually the first thing they want to know.
And of course, knowing your season can be helpful.
But the more colour analyses I do, the more I find myself thinking:
The result itself isn’t the most important part.
What matters more is using that result as a starting point—to understand yourself better and learn to choose colours in a way that feels right for you.
To me, that’s what really matters.
Sometimes, a client will tell me,
“I had a colour analysis before, but I got a different result.”

Personal colour analysis isn’t a test where a machine takes measurements and gives you one fixed answer.
As we try different drapes, we look at what happens to your complexion, your eyes, your skin and the overall balance of your face.
Because there is visual judgement involved, different colour analysts may sometimes see things a little differently.
Lighting, the environment and how you look or feel on the day can all play a part too.
And some people simply look good in a very wide range of colours, so the differences can be incredibly subtle.
As colour analysts, we need to keep all of that in mind and look as carefully as we can.
But colour analysts are human too.
That’s why I don’t want a colour analysis to feel like I’m simply deciding the answer for you.
I want us to look in the mirror together and notice the changes.
That doesn’t necessarily happen straight away.
When one drape after another is being changed around your face, it’s easy to find yourself watching the colours instead of watching what they’re actually doing to you.
So I might say,
“Did you notice how your complexion just changed?”
or,
“Look at your eyes with this one. What do you see?”
Once you know what to look for, something changes. You start watching the mirror much more closely. (And yes, people can get very serious about it!)
Then comes that moment when their expression suddenly changes.
“Oh! I see it!”
“There it is—you see it now!”
And we look at each other and smile.
I love those moments. There’s something really satisfying about seeing the difference for yourself, together.
To me, that’s one of the best parts of a personal colour analysis.
You might try a colour you would never have picked up for yourself, or one you had always assumed wouldn’t suit you, and suddenly notice:
“My complexion looks brighter.”
“My eyes look more alive.”
“My skin looks clearer.”
And then:
“Wait... this colour actually looks good on me!”
A colour that was never even on your radar might end up becoming a new favourite.
That sense of discovery is exactly why I think a personal colour analysis is worth experiencing at least once.
But after you’ve had that experience, there’s something else I hope you’ll remember.
Personal colour analysis isn’t about deciding which colours you’re allowed to wear and which ones you’re not.
“I’m a Summer, so I can’t wear this colour.”
It would be such a shame if having a colour analysis actually made your choices smaller.
In the end, I think we shine most when we wear colours that make us think,
“I love this look.”
“This is how I want to feel.”
“This feels like me.”
Of course, whether a colour suits you matters.
But feeling comfortable in it and feeling like yourself matter just as much.
That’s the thinking behind Authentic Hues.
And there’s one more thing I hope stays with you after your colour analysis.
Rather than simply memorising the name of your season, I’d love for you to gradually develop your own eye for colour.
“Navy is navy.”
“Beige is beige.”

It’s easy to group colours together like that.
But there are so many variations within what we simply call navy, beige, pink, green or any other colour.
Once you start noticing those differences, choosing colours becomes so much more interesting.
Clothes, makeup, accessories...
You start moving from “I’ll just pick this one” to actually seeing the differences and choosing for yourself.
At Authentic Hues, my goal isn’t simply to give you a colour analysis result.
I want to help you recognise what makes you shine and become more confident choosing colours that make you think,
“I love this colour.”
“I love how I look and feel in this.”
Your colour analysis result is a starting point.
What really matters is what comes after—finding your own way of enjoying colour and choosing what feels right for you.
So, if you’ve ever wondered,
“What colours actually suit me?”
or,
“I wonder what I’d look like in colours I’ve never tried before?”
come and try lots of different colours at the Authentic Hues studio.
You may discover much more than just which season you are.
