Forever 21

Authentic Hues

Less rules, more you.

Where Should You Shop for Clothes in Your 50s?

Recently, I've come across Instagram posts from both Japan and the U.S. asking things like, "Where should women in their 50s shop for clothes?"

And I thought, oh yeah, I can see why people ask that.

Have you ever had one of those moments when something you've worn for years suddenly doesn't feel quite right?

You put on your usual makeup, but somehow your face looks a little dull.

You try on an outfit you've always loved, but something feels off.

You look in the mirror and think, "Wait a minute... something's different."

Sound familiar? Or is it just me? (lol)

As We Change, So Does Our Sense of What Looks Good on Us

Think about how much we've changed since our teens and twenties.

We've grown, experienced all kinds of things, and changed both inside and out. So it seems perfectly natural that our tastes and our ideas of what looks good on us might change, too.

For example, I used to wear dresses that fell above the knee. These days, not so much.

For some reason, I've become strangely particular about skirt lengths.

It's not like there's a rule saying women my age shouldn't wear shorter skirts.

It's just that the overall proportions don't feel quite right on me anymore.

On the other hand, some people have loved the same style for decades and still enjoy wearing it.

And that's perfectly fine, too!

Your tastes may change. Or they may not.

Neither is right or wrong.

A Store's Target Market Isn't a Dress Code

When I lived in the U.S., I used to shop at Forever 21.

Yes, Forever 21!

Of course, that doesn't mean I bought just anything.

I looked for colors and designs I liked, thought about whether I actually needed something, and considered whether it was worth the price.

I especially liked their statement jewelry. You could find some fun, bold pieces at reasonable prices, and they were great for adding a little personality to an outfit.

Some of my favorite statement jewelry pieces I've collected over the years

Now, every clothing store has a target market.

That's just basic business, right?

Companies decide who they want to reach, then design their products, advertising, and styling around that audience.

But that doesn't mean they're telling everyone else, "Sorry, you're not our target customer. You can't shop here!" (Haha!)

Even in a store aimed at younger shoppers, you might find a color or design you absolutely love.

If it fits, you like it, and the price makes sense to you, why not buy it?

And here's another thing.

You don't have to recreate the looks you see in store displays.

Of course, if you love the entire outfit, go ahead and buy the whole thing. That certainly makes life easier!

But maybe you find a top you love and pair it with trousers or a jacket you already own.

Change the combination, and suddenly you've created a completely different look.

Instead of changing your style to fit the store, why not use what the store offers to create your own style?

That's how I like to think about shopping.

But What If You're Not Sure What You Like Anymore?

"Just wear what you love!"

Easy to say, isn't it?

But when the clothes you've always worn suddenly don't feel right anymore, you might start wondering what you actually like.

Or what you should even be looking for.

I think that's perfectly normal.

Maybe start by asking yourself a few simple questions.

What colors do I enjoy wearing?

What kind of designs catch my eye?

How do I want to look and feel?

Your answers might be different from ten years ago. Or they might be exactly the same.

Either way is fine.

Then comes the fun part: figuring out how to make the things you love work for who you are today.

Now, I have to admit something.

I like so many different styles that I don't really have one particular signature look.

And because of that, my wardrobe is all over the place!

I fell in love with this dress the moment I saw it. And guess what? I haven't even worn it yet! lol

I have plenty of pieces that don't mix and match particularly well, so putting outfits together can be quite an adventure. (Haha!)

So believe me, I understand that it's not always as simple as it sounds.

And sometimes, when you can't quite figure things out on your own, it helps to talk to someone.

Friends are wonderful, of course.

But you know how a good friend might say, "Oh, that looks great on you!"

Which is lovely, and we appreciate it!

Still, sometimes talking with someone outside your usual circle can help you see things from a different perspective.

At Authentic Hues, I offer Color & Style Support sessions where we can talk through those little questions and frustrations.

Whether you're wondering how to use certain colors, or why your usual outfits don't feel quite right anymore, you're welcome to come and share your thoughts.

I'm not here to tell you what your style should be.

I'd much rather explore the possibilities with you and help you discover what feels right for you.

So, back to the original question.

Where should you shop for clothes in your 50s?

Personally, I don't think the answer is a particular store.

It's more about figuring out what you like and what you want to wear right now.

Once you have a better sense of that, you might find that your shopping options are much wider than you thought.

Less rules, more you.

Forget the age rules. Focus on what feels like you.

At least, that's how I see it!
